Palm Pre interface tour
9/1/2009 external link
We've taken a mountain of shots of the new Palm Pre, but we thought a proper tour of the the apps and interface was in order. So with that in mind we banged together a gallery of shots from messaging, web browser, camera, photos, music, videos, notes, tasks, maps, and calculator. We have to say, the more we check this phone out, the more we like it; we're all pretty much gushing over here. Follow the read link to head over to Engadget Mobile's gallery

Ben Heck crams Xbox 360 controller into Atari 2600 joystick
9/1/2009 external link
As we've seen, a little Atari 2600 is a sure way to liven almost anything -- cakes, candles, landfills -- and it looks like the Xbox 360 is no exception, as none other than Ben Heck has proved with his new so-called 3600 controller. As you might expect, Ben didn't exactly take the expected route to wind up at this creation, instead opting to use the guts of a Guitar Hero 3 controller, which he somehow managed to squeeze into the base of everyone's favorite one-button controller (even leaving room for a guide button and ring of light on the underside). Be sure to hit up the link below for a must-see video of the controller in action and, of course, plenty more pics.[Via Xbox-Scene]

Samsung's Capella Bluetooth earpiece invades CES
9/1/2009 external link
Samsung swept into CES this year like an alien invasion. Tucked away beneath its awards, massive booth presence, and disrupter blast of products is this sexy Bluetooth earpiece. The Capella (shown tucked inside the receiver) is meant to be worn as a fashion accessory. Hey, that's what they say. And at the risk of being juiced by a Martian, well, we're not going to argue.Filed under: Portable Audio, Wearables, WirelessSamsung's Capella Bluetooth earpiece invades CES originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 16:41:00 EST. Spotted: Curve 8900 running on AT&T
9/1/2009 external link
So Boy Genius Report reported on a shot of what seems to be a Curve 8900 running on AT&T -- which seems like a pretty good idea, may we add -- and we're trying to make sense of what's really going on. We hit up RIM's booth at CES to get the lowdown on the situation, and what do you know, the mythical beast is nowhere to be found. The reps on the floor said that it's only for T-Mobile and when we checked every 8900 on the show floor, we couldn't find one running on any other carrier. 'Course, we'd be shocked if RIM wasn't chronically refreshing BGR every fifteen seconds, so it's entirely possible that they saw the news, realized their grave error, and pulled the offending phone posthaste. Either way, it's a great idea, is it not?[Via Boy Genius Report]Filed under: CellphonesSpotted: Curve 8900 running on AT&T originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 16:36:00 EST. Lenovo's Android-powered OPhone to hit China Mobile this quarter
9/1/2009 external link
Look out, China -- Lenovo's all-too-sexy OPhone is about to land in the hands of unsuspecting China Mobile subscribers, or so says Reuters, anyway. The planet's largest mobile carrier will reportedly launch the 3G handset sometime this quarter, though some reports are suggesting that development is being hampered as engineers struggle with creating a Chinese language version of the OS. Once launched, it will go down as the first Android-powered handset to operate on China's home-cooked TD-SCDMA 3G network, but there's no word on just how costly it'll be. Not like cost is really a concern here, right?[Via mocoNews, image courtesy of modmyGphone]Filed under: CellphonesLenovo's Android-powered OPhone to hit China Mobile this quarter originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 16:18:00 EST. SIM2 aims high with $58,000 Grand Cinema HT5000E DLP projector
9/1/2009 external link
SIM2 never fails to stun, and it's proving yet again that it couldn't care less about the global economic situation (or that it just aims at a class of people that are simply unaffected) with the Grand Cinema HT5000E. Said device was actually outed yesterday courtesy of an HDGiants pair-up, but today we're being gifted with the official details. The three-chip DLP beamer includes a trio of 0.95-inch DarkChip4 DMDs, a 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, six lens options, Ethernet jack for remote control and world-class color uniformity / edge-to-edge focus capabilities. Yeah, it'll cost you more than most vehicles and even some diminutive homes at $57,995, but at least the white glove delivery service is included. A true bargain, let us tell you. Full release is after the break.Continue reading SIM2 aims high with $58,000 Grand Cinema HT5000E DLP projectorFiled under: CES, HDTV, Home EntertainmentSIM2 aims high with $58,000 Grand Cinema HT5000E DLP projector originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 15:54:00 EST. OpenPeak intros Atom-powered ProFrame VoIP phone
9/1/2009 external link
Hey, cube dwellers -- call your manager over and give him / her a look at this, because starting today, conference calling will never be the same. From what we can tell, this is the world's first Atom-powered telephone, and also the first telephone we've seen in years that we would joyously park in our own living rooms. OpenPeak's ProFrame is an all-in-one conglomerate that handles VoIP calling and offers up a 7-inch touchscreen panel and "an intuitive navigation menu for easy access to contacts, instant messaging, voicemail, calendar, call logs, memos, news, stocks, weather, and many other useful services." Sure, this critter was totally designed with the hospitality industry in mind, but don't tell us this couldn't be molded into a wicked widgets portal for the home.Filed under: CES, Misc. Now, it's hooking up with HP for the first time ever in order to introduce the USB 2.0 Docking Station with DisplayLink technology. Pretec debuts CFast storage card, proclaims it world's smallest SATA SSD
9/1/2009 external link
Pretec has already pushed standard CompactFlash cards pretty far, and it now looks to be branching out beyond the confines of the format, with it today announcing its new CompactFlash-sized (but apparently not CompactFlash-compatibile) CFast storage card. Helping the card earn that title is its use of a high-speed SATA interface, which boosts the maximum transfer speed to a blistering 375MB per second, or roughly 300% faster than the speediest CompactFlash card on the market today. In a bit of a twist to these usual announcements, Pretec says the the first 32GB cards are actually available starting today (albeit not directly to consumers), with some 64GB card promised to be following "soon."Filed under: StoragePretec debuts CFast storage card, proclaims it world's smallest SATA SSD originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 14:08:00 EST. Palm CEO says Europe gets Pre in the first half, too
9/1/2009 external link
According to the press materials, Palm hadn't intended to announce a timeframe for the 3G GSM version of the Pre this week, but Ed Colligan can pretty much do and say whatever he pleases -- it's one of the perks of wearing the CEO hat -- and he's apparently mentioned in an interview with IDG that it'll roll out in the first half of 2009. That puts the model right in line with the launch window for the CDMA-based Sprint version, giving the carrier virtually zero exclusivity on the global stage -- so if 1337 h4x0rz can figure out how to unlock the thing (and if we were betting folk, we'd wager they can), this all means EDGE-only Pres could end up on AT&T and T-Mobile USA lickety-split. Even if that means losing the European 3G guts, you know you'd buy it. Come on now, don't lie to yourself.Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsPalm CEO says Europe gets Pre in the first half, too originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 14:00:00 EST. AMD announces ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series graphics chips
9/1/2009 external link
NVIDIA has already given its laptop graphics offerings a bit of a boost at CES, and now AMD has followed suit, with it taking the wraps off its new ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series chips. As you may have guessed, these are based on the same core architecture as AMD's 4000 series of desktop graphics cards, and they promise to be as much as twice as fast as their 3000 series predecessors. Helping out significantly on that front is the use of GDDR5 memory, a first for laptop graphics, as well as an increase in the number of stream processing units (800 on the top end HD 4870 and 4850), and a new, cooler 55nm manufacturing process. In addition to those top end graphics options, AMD will also introduce a couple of new 4600 series cards, which use the same GDDR3 memory and 320 stream processing units as before, but are able to fit in tighter enclosures and use less power. Look for the first laptops equipped with the graphics to start rolling out by the end of March.Filed under: LaptopsAMD announces ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series graphics chips originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 13:49:00 EST. Dell Adamo hands-on! (Update: now with video!)
9/1/2009 external link
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Engadget_Does_A_hands_on_With_the_Dell_Adamo'; Looks like our puppy-dog eyes have served us well yet again -- we just got to spend some time with Dell's ultra-hot Adamo. It's really small, less than an inch thick, we'd say -- and although we didn't measure, we'd say that 13-inch screen rumor was spot on. "Adamo" is actually the brand, like Inspiron -- this is just the first machine that'll be out. We weren't allowed to boot it up or do much of anything except take pictures, but it's built really, really, well -- and it's a total smudge magnet, with a super-glossy display and a shiny black panel like the Studio XPS series on the lid. Expansion-wise, we spotted three USB ports and an eSATA jack, and the power adapter is crazy small, with a removable plug for international use. The design is somewhat reminiscent of the Envy 133 with its squared-off shape, but it's still very unique, and while we didn't put in any serious time on the keyboard, it felt solid enough. Here's the problem, though -- we have no idea what's actually inside this gorgeous case, and until we do, it's just another pretty face. Hopefully Dell comes clean on specs and pricing sometime soon -- we'd love for there to be some muscle under that hood. Circuit City CEO details bankruptcy proceedings, admits possibility of liquidation
9/1/2009 external link
Things have been a little rocky (to say the very least) for Circuit City since it filed for bankruptcy protection back in November of last year, and now the acting president and CEO has sent out a letter informing a select few (or the world, as the case may be) of what exactly is going / could be going on. In short, the company has just recently "filed with the Bankruptcy Court a motion that seeks Court approval for a process that formally puts the company up for sale." There's a lot of fluff after that, but the long and short of it is this: a sale could be approved before an auction begins (and its working mighty hard to make sure that happens), but if that doesn't go down by the 16th, the outfit will be " forced to liquidate" soon. We're not trying to be overly dramatic or anything, so we'll encourage you to read the entire, soul-soothing email posted just after the break before going into full-on panic mode.[Thanks, Anonymous]Continue reading Circuit City CEO details bankruptcy proceedings, admits possibility of liquidationFiled under: Displays, Misc. TomTom intros GO 740 LIVE connected GPS
9/1/2009 external link
It's been a rough little while for so-called connected GPS units, but it looks like TomTom is still confident in the idea, and it's just gotten official with its first such device for the US market: the GO 740 LIVE. As you may recall, this one actually made its debut way back at IFA in the summer, and it looks to be mostly unchanged for its entrance into the US. That includes the standard 4.3-inch touchscreen, 2GB of internal flash memory with a microSD card slot for expansion, handsfree Bluetooth functionality, voice recognition, maps of the US and Canada courtesy of TeleAtlas and, of course, a built-in SIM card slot and GPRS modem to let you take advantage of all those "connected" features. As with the Insignia connected GPS unit, you'll get a year of free service with the device, which certainly makes that $500 price tag a bit more bearable. Look for it to be available sometime in the second quarter of this year.[Via PC Magazine]

Here at CES, the company has introduced new 2- and 4-Port HDMI KVM switches with USB 2.0 Peripheral Sharing (GCS1792, GCS1794), which are HDMI 1.3b and HDCP compliant. As if that weren't enough, both boxes also support 1080p resolutions, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. In related news, the 4-Port DualView Dual-Link DVI KVMP Switch (GCS1644) also saw the light of day today, and everything mentioned here should be up for sale in Q1. Oh, but don't think these suckers will come cheap -- prices range from $299.95 for the 2-port HDMI KVM to $679.95 for the DualView sibling.Filed under: CES, PeripheralsIOGEAR intros first HDMI-compliant KVMs: 1080p, lossless audio supported originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 08:12:00 EST. Victorinox Presentation Pro floated by the Swiss army
9/1/2009 external link
Victorinox -- makers of the original Swiss Army knife -- made its first trek to CES with this, its new Presentation Pro. Tucked away with insane precision are a removable 32GB USB drive with fingerprint authentication, laser pointer, and Bluetooth remote control for your Windows-only PC or laptop presentations. Yep, key ring and scissors too. It even features a blade to fight off your enemies and a file to scrape away any fingerprints after the deed is done. We went hands on with the device and were truly impressed with the build quality. Here's the rub: it'll cost you $330 when it ships in May. Did we say it had a laser?Gallery: Victorinox Presentation ProFiled under: Misc. Pioneer's DV-420V upscaling DVD player somehow makes MP3s sound better
9/1/2009 external link
Pioneer already blew out its good stuff this morning, but it saved this gem for a little afternoon delight. The DV-420V 1080p upconverting DVD player not only makes your existing DVD collection look its best, but it's the first deck to feature "an exclusive MP3 encoding capability for supreme music portability." Oddly enough, those are pretty much the only details we're given on the subject, but the front-panel USB port enables playback of DivX files and JPEG shots if you find that of interest. We're thinking not, so you can feel free to save your $90 when it ships this summer.Filed under: CES, Home EntertainmentPioneer's DV-420V upscaling DVD player somehow makes MP3s sound better originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 07:20:00 EST. L.A. Live convention center / hotel includes gigantic, see-through outdoor screen
9/1/2009 external link
The 54-story tower planned to house The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Los Angeles and JW Marriott when it opens in 2010 will also include an 8,000 sq ft screen on its eastern face, without disrupting the view of guests inside. The result of a deal between property owners AEG and sponsor Panasonic, the 50-foot by 160-foot screen will live in the neighborhood of the new Yankee Stadium and the Dallas Cowboys new home. No word on the exact res, but there will no doubt be plenty of HD as the entire complex, including Staples Center and Nokia Theatre, is getting Panasonic screens installed as part of the deal. Our reservations are already in, check after the break for an illustration of the future layout.Continue reading L.A. Ultimate Ears adds in MetroFi 170 / 220 headphones
9/1/2009 external link
Ultimate Ears (by Logitech, we'll have you know) has introduced two new MetroFi earbuds here in Las Vegas, and both of 'em promise 16 decibels of noise isolation and offer up a single-driver, in-ear design. The 220 ups the ante with a swank titanium-coated speaker for more detail in the highs, though both sets are pushing a red-colored right earphone (so you don't get confused, or something) and three sizes of silicon ear cushions. We're also told that both sets will eventually be available in vi models ($10 extra) that boast an integrated microphone, but those uninterested in that can snag the vanilla versions for $50 (170) / $80 (220) next month.[Via iLounge]Filed under: CES, Portable AudioUltimate Ears adds in MetroFi 170 / 220 headphones originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 06:12:00 EST. NVIDIA makes GTX 295 official now that it's on sale, 285 too for good measure
9/1/2009 external link
We already knew more or less all we needed to know about NVIDIA's GTX 295, however, despite being already on sale, the company has decided now is a good time to grace the model with a press release. The GTX 285 has been given the formal treatment too -- despite not being available until next week. If you missed the earlier specs, the $499(ish) 295 includes dual 55-nm GT200 GPUs and supports nearly 2GB of memory, while the $399 285 makes do with but one processor and an undisclosed RAM ceiling (though the upcoming Winfast, pictured above, comes with 1GB and one yellow robot). Again the 295 is up for order now, while slightly more budget conscious gamers will have to wait until January 15 for the 285. How would you change HTC's Touch Diamond / Pro?
9/1/2009 external link
HTC's Touch Diamond and QWERTY-packin' Touch Pro have run into some stiff competition here in the US of A, but as Adam Smith would certify, all that competition is only for the best. Now that you've seen what these two can do, not to mention their rivals, we're wondering how you would change whichever handset it is (of these two, obviously) that you own. Implement a Touch HD-style display? Load it up with Android? Round those edges a bit more? Add a bigger battery at the expense of style? Say it loud, say it proud, say it down in comments below.Filed under: CellphonesHow would you change HTC's Touch Diamond / Pro? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 05:05:00 EST. OLED Association and Samsung show flexible screen
9/1/2009 external link
The OLED Association and Samsung gifted us with a quick view of a foldable OLED display attached to a giant and very make believe Samsung phone. We saw the same back in November, but this time we got up close and filmed it ourselves. We're sure this mockup in no way reflects any future handset design from Samsung, but it lets us dream of a day with giant foldable displays, and those will be great days. Follow on for a vid of it folding and unfolding and a mini gallery, too.

IOGEAR's Wireless USB Audio / Video Kit ships soon for $350
9/1/2009 external link
Based on the fact that this kit contains connectors for stereo audio, VGA and Wireless USB, we're inclined to believe that this here product is actually a renamed version of the Wireless USB to VGA kit we caught wind of last year. Even if not, however, this will help you stream content at up to 720p over VGA for 30 feet sans wires, and it's fully compatible with Windows XP and Vista. The bad news? The price has increased by around $50 since last mention, with the latest report suggesting a $349.95 sticker and a March ship date.Filed under: CES, Peripherals, WirelessIOGEAR's Wireless USB Audio / Video Kit ships soon for $350 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 04:31:00 EST.
