What’s Your Favorite Cheese?
6/1/2009 external link
I love cheese - all kinds of cheese (unless it’s runny).
I’m staying at the Orchard Garden Hotel in San Francisco this week. On their room service menu, there’s an “American Farmstead Cheese Selection.” I could have ordered each one individually, but opted for the full-on cheese tasting platter. Who could resist?! Sure, maybe the lactose intolerant…
Still(ton), I enjoyed:
Humbolt Fog, Cypress Grove / Arcata, CA - Elegant soft ripened goat’s milk cheese. It has a creamy, luscious texture with a subtle tangy flavor. Each wheel contains a ribbon of edible vegetable ash along its center.
Tamula Tomme, Juniper Grove / Redmond, OR - Raw goat’s milk cheese with a washed rind that has been aged 2 to 4 months. Semi-firm texture, creamy interior, and a slightly nutty flavor.
Great Hill Blue, Great Hill / Marion, MA - Blue cheese made from raw cow’s milk. This cheese is aged 6 months (as opposed to the 2 or 3 month aging period of other blue cheeses), creating a round, robust flavor without the intense acidic finish of other blues.
Green Hill, Sweet Grass Dairy / Thomasville, GA - Jersey cow’s milk cheese with a buttery taste and soft, creamy texture. Jersey cows are grass fed and developed just for Sweet Grass Dairy, causing the color of the cow’s milk to be bright yellow from the higher butterfat composition and pleasantly acidic with a very sleek finish.

Sesame Street Muppets and Their Computers
5/1/2009 external link
Like many of you, I grew up with Sesame Street on the television. Kids these days likely get Sesame Street everywhere BUT the television. We didn’t have many media options in the early ’70s.
There was only one Sesame Street segment that scared the bejesus out of me every time - like, I couldn’t stand to be in the same room when it came on. I had nightmares about it, in fact. There was this kid who talked to a broken mirror until it cracked (or something). It was a regular Sesame Street cartoon, but I couldn’t tell you much more than that (likely because it’s a repressed memory at this point).
Who could forget:
The Ladybug 12 at the Ladybug Picnic
Yep-yep-yep, uh-huh uh-huh - brrrrrrrrr-ring
Bert’s amazing collection of bottle caps
Mr. Looper… I mean: Hooper
C is for Cookie
Did you know that the Muppets also dabbled in the latest (and seemingly greatest) technology back in the day? They did, and thanks to the magic of YouTube, we have clips recorded for posterity. That is, until the Copyright Monster comes along with DMCA the Frog (Kermit’s long lost cousin who didn’t show up until after Cousin Oliver in the later seasons).
Cookie Monster had his Cookie Computer song:

Super Grover used to work in tech support, you know:

The Road Not Taken (with Yoda and a Dog)
5/1/2009 external link
I was asked to read Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” poem in the voice of Yoda - scroll down to watch the video. I didn’t do too bad! I’m hereby challenging you to do the same (and record the video for posterity, of course). If you don’t want to talk like Yoda, try another character voice impersonation.
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Exclusive: Sirius and XM Satellite Radio on Your iPhone / iPod
5/1/2009 external link
If you have an XM or Sirius satellite radio subscription, and you carry your iPod Touch or iPhone with you wherever you go, then you won’t want to be without StarPlayr.
In as seamless a fashion as possible, this app will connect to your account and immediately begin streaming channels directly to you - in 32k or 64k glory (although you need a WiFi connection for the higher quality audio stream).
I apologize for the lackluster close-up quality of the video - it’s the best I could do at such short notice. If you’d rather not watch this StarPlayr walk-thru, I’ve snapped a few screenshots which may better illustrate what’s going on with this app.

Will Windows 7 be Worth the Wait?
5/1/2009 external link
I’ve seen the latest Windows 7 builds running on not-very-powerful computers and the speed was still remarkable.
If you happen to like Vista, I think Windows 7 will make for a fantastic upgrade.
If you were waiting for them to fix the bugs in Vista, Windows 7 appears to be that long awaited (and overdue) “service pack.”
If you don’t mind Windows XP, I believe there’s little that will draw you into Windows 7. Microsoft hasn’t addressed (and likely won’t) basic mode UI speed issues, nor have they done much to make classic mode look presentable. If Vista’s veneer doesn’t wow you, neither will Windows 7.
Beta build 7000 will be downloadable from Microsoft in just a week or so (according to sources). Find a secondary machine and try installing it. Honestly, if the computer can’t handle all the bells and whistles, you shouldn’t bother with Windows 7 (or Vista, for that matter) at all.
I’ll be installing the first public Windows 7 beta on my HP Touchsmart PC the day they release it (I hope). It’ll be interesting to see just how well they handle multi-touch. I’ve been spoiled by iPhone fluidity, and I hope usability translates.
Windows 7’s performance in a VMware appliance (virtual machine) isn’t as bad as Vista’s, although it fares better in classic mode (but classic mode in both 7 and Vista is beyond ghastly compared to XP).

Still Image Quality from the Best Video Cameras
4/1/2009 external link
“musicmaster890″ was awestruck by the scenery in Seattle (specifically, the landscape shot in my recent video camera field test). He decided to take high quality stills and sew them together into single panoramic photos. I say the results were quite striking - further lending credibility to my argument that the Creative Vado balances color better than the Zi6 and the Mino HD.
I’ve uploaded these images to my Flickr account (obviously, opting to embed them in this post as well). If you’d like to view a higher resolution image, simply click the thumbnail. They were all taken from the videos in this series. No, I don’t live on a lake; the mirror effect was added for artistic purposes. The photos were not retouched in any other way.
Pure Digital’s Flip Mino HD is, as expected, a bit washed out. Yes, all it needs is a bit of contrast and saturation adjustment, but this was lifted directly from a video. Wouldn’t you have better colors from your video camera without needing to edit in post?
Kodak’s Zi6 does fairly well with contrast, but the sky is a tad oversaturated (almost looking like the Mino HD’s sky - minus the Mino’s inexplicable green tint).
Thanks to its wide angle lens, Creative’s Vado HD captured much more (vertically) compared to the other two devices. The sky’s blue and the clouds’ orange seem true to my memory of the scene, too.
Which one looks best? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One thing’s for sure: I love my backyard!

The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything
4/1/2009 external link
There are times when you need to ask someone a question:
When the question is personal in nature.
When only one person knows the answer.
When the answer is trivial.
When the answer is temporal.
When nobody else would understand the question.
When crowdsourcing would work most effectively.
Then, there are questions that have readily-available answers. For those, it’s best to:
Open up your “Web browser” and go to Google.com.
Try a few keyword searches on a “Web site” called Google.com.
Use something called a “search engine” at Google.com.
Flip open your Internet-enabled phone and visit Google.com.
Rely on your own research skills to navigate results on Google.com
Think about trying Google.com.

Phishing Scam Spreading on Twitter
3/1/2009 external link
A few minutes ago, I received a direct message from one of my twitter followers:
hey! check out this funny blog about you… jannawalitax . blogspot . com
And there’s another one:
Hey, i found a website with your pic on it… LOL check it out here twitterblog . access-logins . com / login
DO NOT VISIT the URL in question. It will redirect you immediately to a suspicious domain: twitter . access-logins . com - notice the subdomain? Worse yet, here’s what you’d see there right now:
This is NOT the Twitter login page, and it smells completely phishy! Suggestion: do NOT log in to your Twitter account through any site other than Twitter.com. This may go without saying, but consider how many third-party Twitter services you use? Seems it’s about time for some kind of verification / validation for applications using the Twitter API - so you can be sure you’re passing your credentials to the right people. I’m guessing this particular phishing scam is not using the API (but there’s no way for a user to properly verify).
This phishing domain appears to be registered in China, and I’m about to report ‘em to OpenDNS (via PhishTank.com):
Organization : zhang xiaohu

Address : changningzhonghuainanlu192hao

Please, tell your followers to NOT VISIT or LOGIN THROUGH that site! Watch out for these direct messages. If you did happen to visit one of the offending URLs, you should be safe so long as you didn’t try to log into your Twitter account there.

Video Camera Comparison Test: Mino, Zi6, Vado!
3/1/2009 external link
I kept the camera(s) as steady as possible as I panned across the landscape from the vantage point of my bedroom window this evening. Watch the full HD version on YouTube, or scroll down to watch the high-quality embedded version.
Each series of clips were taken back-to-back - the first series, earlier when the sunset was striking the clouds in a dramatic fashion; the second series, when it was a bit more overcast (and there were both pink and blue hues on the horizon).
In each set, the cameras were used in this order: Flip Mino HD, Kodak Zi6, Creative Vado HD. You’ll see annotations lead off each scene (then quickly disappear).
I removed the audio from this video to alleviate volume level discrepancies, as well as to provide further concentration on the video quality at hand. Obviously, viewing in HD is required for fairest judgment.
Processing was NOT done to any of these videos; these recordings were sewn together in a seamless fashion and uploaded to YouTube in their near-original condition.
The Flip Mino HD pretty much washed out the sky’s vibrant colors in the first set, and effectively made a drab mountain view appear even more drab in the second set.
The Kodak Zi6 did a good job with the colors, but couldn’t strike a good balance between the bright sky and the dark landscape in either set.
My verdict still favors the Creative Vado HD - not only with its wide-angle lens capability, but its truer-to-life colors and exposure balance (between dark and light in the same shot).

I Love My Yamaha Tenori-on
3/1/2009 external link
When I was younger, I loved playing with electronic keyboards - not because I knew how to “play piano,” but because I loved hearing the various sounds. I learned a few of my favorite tunes by ear (playing by trial and error). Ultimately, I fell in love with freestyling and crafting harmonies with my fingers.
I received the Tenori-on last year, and have loved it ever since. Seems that its capabilities either enthrall or repel viewers (or listeners) of my live stream, so I don’t play it as often as I’d like to. It’s not quite a musical instrument, although you’re able to create music with it. Is it music, or just a seemingly random sequence of notes? Are you creating, or merely pushing buttons, with a Tenori-on?
I would have killed for one of these things when I was a kid. They’re incredibly addictive, and if you’re someone who likes to create ANYTHING, you shouldn’t find much to dislike in the Tenori-on. Well, you might not like the price - but you get much more than bragging rights in return!
If you’d like a similar software experience, there’s always the free Weepr AIR app. Plus, there’s PaklSound1 for the iPhone. They’re the closest you can come to a Tenori-on (short of buying one for yourself).
On New Year’s, Stuzilla donated money to have me perform an impromptu Tenori-on recital. I’m glad UncleJohn recorded it, as I never save my own creations (even though that’s an option with the Tenori-on).
